My Family is my Tribe

Documentary Short // Explore Series Presented by Wahoo and EF

“A family that plays together, stays together.” That was Neilson Powless’ dad’s motto when he was growing up. Every weekend, Neilson’s mom and dad would take him and his older sister Shayna to swim, bike, and run in races around California. Their mom was an Olympic marathoner and their dad was a competitive triathlete in the Air Force, but together they always made sure that sports were fun first. All that play made Neilson and Shayna fast. Now, they are both professional cyclists. Neilson is about to become a father himself; his wife, Frances, is pregnant. Frances is a ballerina. She is his lead. With Frances, Neilson can dance over the ups and downs of life as a professional sportsman. Far away from home, Neilson and Frances are still learning how to keep doing the things that they love. Frances has learned about cycling, as Neilson has learned about ballet. Becoming parents is about to change their lives. What they know is that they will always keep playing together, because they are going to stay together.
