Cédrine Kerbaol’s glittering palmarès do not define her. What makes the French time trial champion and Tour de France stage winner truly special is the way she can win without ever losing her sense of self—and lose without ever being defeated. Cédrine was disappointed with this summer’s Tour de France Femmes. She finished the final stage of the Tour in tears after a crash at the base of the Col du Joux Plane wrecked her plan to attack in the Alps. I watched Cédrine through the camera as Cédrine met with her family and teammates and was soon smiling again through her tears. We followed Cédrine on her camping trip after the race and got to know her—her story, her family, and where she comes from. Cédrine discovered cycling as a teenager when she was bullied at school for refusing to fit in. The sport gave her a way to cope with disappointment and pain and allowed her to spend time in the natural world that she has always loved. On the bike, Cédrine’s free spirit soars. That is why she inspires us. That is why she continues to make us dream.
